Crochet Heart Table Runner Pattern

Create a beautiful heart-shaped crochet table runner using navy blue and cream yarn. The design combines solid hearts with delicate openwork hearts and a decorative scalloped border, making it perfect for a dining table, romantic décor, Valentine’s Day, weddings, or everyday home decoration.

🧶 Materials

  • Navy blue cotton yarn
  • Cream/off-white cotton yarn
  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

📏 Finished Design

The runner is made from five heart motifs arranged vertically:

  • Solid navy heart
  • Openwork cream heart with navy edging
  • Solid navy heart
  • Openwork cream heart with navy edging
  • Large solid navy heart

Each heart has a delicate cream scalloped outline.

✨ Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • st – stitch
  • sp – space
  • inc – increase
  • rep – repeat

❤️ Step 1: Make the Heart Base

Start with a magic ring or a small foundation chain.

Work the lower point of the heart first, using sc and hdc stitches. Increase gradually on both sides to create the characteristic heart shape.

As the piece becomes wider, work the two upper lobes separately.

First lobe

Work several stitches into the upper section, increasing around the curve to create a rounded top.

Second lobe

Repeat the same shaping on the opposite side.

Join the center with a slip stitch and continue around the entire heart.

Finish with a round of sc to stabilize the shape.

🤍 Step 2: Openwork Heart

For the cream hearts, use a chain-and-double-crochet pattern to create the open mesh.

A simple repeat can be:

dc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc

Repeat across the heart while following the heart’s shaping.

The chain spaces create the attractive diamond-shaped openings seen in the photograph.

Keep the outer edge relatively dense so the heart holds its shape.

💙 Step 3: Navy Border

Attach navy yarn around the cream heart.

Work sc evenly around the entire edge, placing extra stitches around the curves and point so the heart remains flat.

Add another round if you want the navy outline to be more prominent.

🌊 Step 4: Decorative Cream Edging

For the finishing border, attach cream yarn and create small scallops around the outside.

A simple edging is:

sl st, 3 sc in next stitch, sl st in next stitch

Repeat around the heart.

This produces the small rounded decorative edge visible throughout the runner.

❤️ Step 5: Solid Navy Hearts

Make the solid hearts using navy yarn.

Instead of the openwork pattern, fill the entire heart with closely worked sc or hdc stitches.

Keep the tension consistent so the hearts remain firm and flat.

Finish each heart with the same cream scalloped edging.

🔗 Step 6: Join the Hearts

Arrange the hearts vertically from smallest to largest, alternating the solid and openwork designs.

Position each heart so that the point of one heart sits close to the rounded top of the next heart.

Join them discreetly using sl st or small sewing stitches on the wrong side.

For a continuous runner, you can also add small connecting chains between the motifs.

🌸 Finishing

After all five hearts have been joined, weave in all loose ends carefully.

Lightly block the runner on a flat surface, shaping each heart and opening the lace sections.

Allow it to dry completely before placing it on your table.

💡 Tip

For a more elegant look, use 100% cotton yarn in navy and ivory. You can also customize the runner with red and white, burgundy and cream, or any two contrasting colors.
